Influencer Marketing: The Reality Behind the Posts

If you have been on Instagram at any point today, I’m sure you have scrolled past at least ONE influencer post on your timeline. Influencer marketing has quickly become one of the most powerful tools for marketing a product on social media. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Dwayne Johnson make millions of dollars every year just to post about a company’s product on Instagram! Now, even the average person or child can get a piece of the pie and become an effective influencer for brands as long as they make engaging and appealing content and have a large social media following. However, there is more to influencer life than just posting a nice photo.

First of all, being an influencer means that your profile is open to the public and also open to criticism. People and bots from all over the world will be able to comment on your posts and message you directly with negative comments and that can be extremely taxing on your mental health and your confidence. Secondly, your appearance and the aesthetic of your posts will always be important and on display. Whereas the average person can just post their favorite face cream and go, you have to set the scene. The sink must be clean, the lighting must be perfect and you must look well put together, yet casual, like the entire post wasn’t carefully orchestrated for public consumption. Last but not least, your posts can and will actually influence people. It is important that influencers actually post products that they support and use because promoting a product that they haven’t actually researched or used can easily turn into a PR nightmare.
