A Letter to My Younger Self
(This short feature was written by our intern Imani Reed)
Dear Self,
You do not realize this yet, but you are creative, smart, and incredibly strong. Your setbacks are pebbles, not mountains, and each obstacle is there to make you stronger. You are going to take each moment and grow from it. Self, I know things may sometimes seem tough, but you will be okay.
Self, you are resilient. Those no’s that you will hear will help steer you to the path you are meant to be on. Those doors that you thought shut you out from opportunities were closed to you to make sure you opened the right doors. Our journey in life is not the straight line to success that everyone envisions it to be. There are curves and speed bumps, but it is all a part of life. I promise you will be okay.
Self, do not be afraid to take chances. I know you have not always liked change, but the quicker you relieve yourself of that fear, the quicker you will be able to explore more opportunities. Do not fear moving to a different state or applying for an elevated position. Self, you got this. You are not going to fail. You are going to learn and grow, and above all else, you will be okay.
Self, ignore the negativity. Not everyone is going to be your friend and not everyone is going to support you. You will learn to support yourself and find a network that uplifts and encourages you. It is okay to be cautious when getting to know new people, but don’t block everyone out forever. Proceed to getting to know them with caution and remember, you will be okay.
Self, you are phenomenal.
